We connect Maine students
to life-changing outdoor experiences

Time outdoors improves teen mental and physical health

At Teens to Trails, we believe that Life Happens Outside®.

Our trips and programs are designed for Maine teenagers to connect with their peers, discover new things about themselves and the natural world, and grow together. Our goal is to support the well-being of our teens, so that they can enjoy healthy lives outside. Here are a few of the ways that outdoor time improves health:

  • Reduces Anxiety and Improves Mood

Spending time in nature provides a respite from today’s academic and social pressures, elevates our moods, lowers our blood pressure, and even reduces stress hormones.

  • Builds Strong Social and Environmental Connections

Time outdoors creates opportunities for connection, reduces feelings of loneliness and social isolation, and helps us feel a sense of belonging in the natural world.

  • Cultivates a Sense of Mattering

Engaging in fun, collaborative outdoor experiences builds confidence, strengthens our relationships, and nurtures feelings that we matter to our broader community.

  • Creates Opportunities for Physical Activity

We are more active when we are outside, and engaging in fun, non-competitive outdoor experiences promotes healthy habits.

  • Outdoor Clubs

We help middle and high schools start and operate a thriving Outdoor Club. Student-led and faculty-facilitated, Outdoor Clubs introduce teenagers to a variety of activities regardless of ability or experience.

  • Life Happens Outside® Challenge

Every fall, we challenge schools to compete for how many minutes their staff, students, and teachers can spend outdoors in one week.

  • Outdoor Explorer's Club

A 6-week adaptable curriculum for middle school students designed to nourish the joys of being in nature through free play and exploration.
