Meet Our Advisory Council
Rufus Brown
- Rufus E. Brown is an attorney with Brown & Burke, PA in
Portland, Maine, whose practice includes outdoor law and
litigation. As a former Deputy Attorney General, he represented
Baxter State Park. In private practice, he represents Wilderness
Medical Associates and New England Outdoor Center. He has written
extensively on issues of risk management in outdoor programs. Rufus is
a highly regarded writer and analyst, with an extensive record of
volunteer and educational work throughout the State of Maine.
Julie Isbill -
Julie is a landscape architect now working in
the Maine Office of the Rivers & Trails program of the National
Park Service. In her job, Julie assists communities in Maine
& New Hampshire to create trails & greenways and conserve
rivers & open space. Julie has two sons and
greatly enjoys walking, gardening, and other other outdoor pursuits.
Pete Phair
- Pete is President and Founder of Northeast Educational Outreach
Associates, specializing in group process training for youth &
adults through adventure-based and experiential learning principles.
He has a wide and varied background as a teacher, consultant,
facilitator and camp director. He has worked in youth programming for
nearly all of his thirty-year career and has extensive experience
designing & facilitating experientially-based programs for kids and
adults of all ages & abilities. A whitewater raft guide for
fifteen years, Pete lives in Wayne, Maine with his daughter
and enjoys mountain biking, playing hockey and spending time on the
river. He received his teaching degree from the University of Maine at
Farmington and was a member of the last class at UMF to receive dual
certifications in elementary and special education.
Greg Shute - Greg is
responsible for the Wilderness Trips and Big Eddy Campground Programs
at the Chewonki Foundation. Greg and his staff have years of trip
leading experience on the waters and mountains of Maine and
beyond. He plans trips to challenge participants both physically
and intellectually with activities that build self confidence, a sense
of community, and a greater awareness of the inter relatedness of the
world around us. Greg is a Maine Registered Guide and
Co-President of the Maine Wilderness Guides Organization (MWGO).
He holds certifications in Wilderness First Responder First Aid, CPR
and water safety.
